This number will be phased out soon, but for now, it’s still required for all “For Hire” interstate motor carriers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires this to protect the public. It’s their job to make sure you have valid insurance on file at all times. If it gets canceled, so is your Authority to operate. There really is nothing more to the number than that.

Even though you can obtain your DOT Number in less than a day, remember, you still can’t operate interstate as a “For Hire” carrier until all of the proper MC Authority paperwork has been filed and processed by the FMCSA.
